oud-or-agarwood-hydrodistillation

Hello oudlovers,

Back again with Agarwood Indonesia, on today’s topic we would like to discuss about

“Oud Oil or Agarwood Oil Scent Regional Differences.”

Well this is 2 months after the latest post about Ratu Kencana Oud Oil. The Ratu Kencana Oud Oil turn out to be Super Duper Extra flowery thanks to the very high content of Benzyl Acetone at 40% !! That will give the very ziing part at the top compare to our oud oil or agarwood oil before. This is because we found a new tweaks for optimizing the volatiles to come up not mention the mad selection of raw material that you can see at our previous post. And what does this related to this title “Oud Oil or Agarwood Oil Scent Regional Differences?”

Last year at this blog we discuss about the difference between oud oil or agarwood oil regional scent inside Indonesia, that Indonesian oud mostly divided into 2 strains in their aroma. Firstly the oil rich that goes for this  Ratu Kencana with a lot of top notes. Usually the raw material use is from Kalimantan either South, East or Further North. If you goes To the Central and West Kalimantan  and straight to Sumatra the aroma will be goes into resin strain in which resinous rich.

The Griynops genus which live in the Eastern Part of Indonesia is very rich in resin, in which the aroma would be deeper and calmer. However if tweaks are made the aroma switching is very much possible.

What this does related to other oud oil or agarwood oil Scent regional differences?

If we jumped outside Indonesia at the closest is Malaysia for example, during Muhammad Taftazani’s journey to Tawau last year, the regional scent at non treated oud there is very near to Eastern or Northern Kalimantan due they are are in the same Island.

In 2010 Taha of Agaraura showed  Muhammad Taftazani of agarwoodindonesia several oud or agarwood oils that are from various countries. Indonesia ( It was Ensaroud Borneo 3000), Cambodia, And Hindi.

Cambodia that showed  reminds Muhammad of plums, very very near to a fermented fruit that almost undergo a complete fermentation.Very sour to his  new experiences smelling oud oil.

Then it goes oil from India or Hindi  oud oil, Muhammad first is reaction “brrrh” He was kind a lost, like very shock but then strangely enjoys it. The top note is like a walk in wet paddy fields when the hays started to rot….but then it turn into something else into great musky and powdery type of scent.

That’s the very little knowlegde of other regional scent until now :). But to our opinion the regional scent at those particular area were created by process in distillation not by natural way. I am not going this versus this not at all. But from my own experience scent can be created. Like what I have from Candan Fantasy it is very very Papuan Oud but it was from Aceh. It was due to the process of adding bio reactant inside and soak the wood together with it in just within 3 days. I assure you that I can shorten the length of soaking that took weeks to do it into just maximum 4-5 days. With the help of bio reactant that is very safe to use.

According to S.Rasool and R.Mohammed quoted  by  Shiou  Yih Lee and Rozi  Mohamed.

The main compounds found in the oleoresin of agarwood are a complex mixture of sesquiterpenes and 2-(2-phenylethyl) chromones (reviewed in Naef 2011 ).
Together with some simple volatile aromatic compounds, they create this impressive pleasing odor that some described as balsamic, spicy, woody,
and sweet.

Analysis into the chemical constituents of agarwood
had actively begun in the 1960’s and is continuing into the twenty-first century. Thus far,the total number of identified compounds are over 150. This explains
the richness and diverse organoleptic properties found in agarwood from various species and regions.

This goes further if the process involved are different, we suffice ourselves to discuss distillation not go further like SCFE ( Super Critical Fluid Extraction) or Sub Critical Fluid Extraction, because these later two process is not gaining just oil but the whole extract of agarwood.

Let us continue then,  we at agarwoodindonesia believe that oud oil or agarwood oil should smell like it’s true chips when slowly burned on a burner. So we imply techniques to attain this condition, which is hydro and steam distillation  mostly. But at other regions such is in Indochina or India hydro distillation plus soaking is the preferred way to do it. That is because oud oil or agarwood oil  from those particular area are having their “market cultural acceptance ” norm. to the consumers Hindi oud oil should smell as fecal as possible that is because the market accept that for years even for decades, so if one tried to mass market Hindi oud oil without barnyardigans they will go confuse. Except with very very long re-education. The same way applied to Indochina oud which in my opinion is mostly “plumish” fruity, tobaccoish too.

Perhaps, agarwoodindonesia should try sample hunting to widen our border of knowlegde anytime soon.
